Hey Andrea, I found all the towels
We’ve had a strange shortage of bath towels around the house for several months, to the point where we went and bought some more so we’d have enough towels when we had several guests with us at the same time.
This morning I wanted to take advantage of the light traffic due to MLK day and ride my bike to work, but I wasn’t sure what clothes and shower items I had here, so I packed a bag and brought most everything with me. Here’s what I found in my cabinet at work:
- 2 bath towels
- 2 hand towels
- 1 jacket
- 1 warm shirt
- 2 polo shirts
- 2 undershirts
- 1 pair chinos
- 1 pair shoes
- Full set of shower toiletries
I guess I didn’t need that full bag today after all — I was only missing underwear and a belt and I could easily have fit those in a jersey pocket.

That mileage goal…
With 2006 behind us, I feel strangely compelled to report on my mileage goal, rather than letting it slip quietly in to history, remembered only by me, and maybe by Google.
I know I didn’t make the goal, and I’m certain I rode at least 1,615 miles, but how close I got to 2,000 I can’t tell for sure, because from the 22nd of May through the 10th of June, nearly three weeks when I was doing at least two group rides a week, so say 60+ miles per week, I was without my GPS bike computer. I also managed to lose my mileage logging spreadsheet when I moved from using Spiffy to using my new iMac. I’ll be conservative and spot myself 50 miles for each of those three weeks, but that still only gets me to 1,765.
I did a bit better than in 2005, but I know I can do better, even with New Baby on the way. I think 2,000 miles is an achievable goal for me; it’s only 39 miles per week, or one good training ride of less than 3 hours.

Batteries
A list of devices that need their batteries replaced, and I noticed them all within the last week:
- Garmin Bike Computer Heart Rate Monitor Strap
- Garmin Bike Computer Cadence Sensor
- Polar Heart Rate Monitor Watch
- Swiss Army ‘nice’ watch
Okay, so it doesn’t look quite as impressive in a list as I thought it might. I also have three other watches I no longer wear, which I received as gifts as early as when I was in high school, that also all need new batteries.

Devising a classical music tagging system
This week at work, I wanted to listen to a particular recording I have of a particular piece, mainly because I’d read a bit of news about the soloist who was featured on the recording, and remembered I had the recording. At first I couldn’t find the recording because the id3 tags iTunes had downloaded for me from Gracenote were ridiculously messed up. Looking more closely at my on-line classical music collection, I realized the id3 tags were even less consistent for classical music than for other genres, like Rock or Pop.
I did a few Google searches because I was sure someone else had encountered and solved this problem. Of course, with all the meta data available about every classical recording, often with multiple composers, pieces, and sometimes even soloists featured on the same ‘album’, it gets to be pretty confusing to search through it.
tunequest supplied the best suggestions so far, which included repurposing the Album tag to refer to the specific piece. That works out pretty well for me, in fact the only time I can see it as a problem is if I wanted to re-rip that album at higher quality later. To account for that, I plan to use the Comment tag to refer to the record label and catalog number for each album, so if I re-rip at a later date I can just search for that, and all the original tracks will come up. Here’s a quick screen-shot of what I’ve done. I welcome comments and suggestions!
