Perfect! I knew if the right hardware at the right price point came out, someone would do the hard work for me.

Phone and ipod update

Nandi at the phone store wants to try resetting the phone to factory defaults to try to clear up my problems with the v400 being confused about its open vs closed state, despite my very convincing arguments that the problem was hardware related. He did enter a trouble ticket in Cingular’s system, so if it continues to exhibit those irritating behaviors, the warranty people will have some history of complaints on the issue so they won’t think I’m just trying to get a new phone out of it.

The ipod has also been resurrected, though I didn’t do anything except leave it plugged in to AC power for a few hours. Should look in to replacing the battery?

Mom would say Mercury is in retrograde

My mom tells me Mercury is in retrograde whenever my gadgets fail me. Mercury must be in retrograde all the time! Either that, or I need to replace my mobile phone. It’s a Motorola V400, and seemed a nice upgrade from my older Samsung. The camera feature is absolutely useless, but the phone itself seemed pretty decent at first.

Now the latch sensor is broken, so half the time it can’t tell whether it’s open or closed, and when I try to answer a call, it will frequently hang up on me, so I have to go to the trouble of calling the person back, or waiting for them to leave a voicemail. Yuck!

Our 1st-generation ipod, now about 3 years old I think, has started to flake out on me as well. The headphones take a lot of fiddling to get both ears working; I probably crimped the cable pulling them in and out of the little case I use when I’m traveling. This morning when I tried to plug it in to the stereo, the buttons wouldn’t respond either on battery or plugged in to the AC adaptor. I tried it on the firewire port of Pismo right afterwards and no luck there either. I left it on the AC while I was out today, so maybe it will have caught its second wind by the time I get home. If not, it’s going under the putty knife tomorrow to see whether it’s the battery or the firewire port, both of which should be treatable illnesses.

Switched blogs

I switched to WordPress. The transition was relatively easy as I didn’t have too many posts on blogspot. WordPress claimed to have an import script, but it didn’t work so I just took half an hour to cut and paste.

The old blog is available for historical purposes if you ever want to look at it. Comments on old posts didn’t make the transition, but Schuyler was the only one with any comments and I’m sure he’ll send an email if he needs to follow up again.

Ridiculous airport design

The terminals at Kansas City, MO’s big airport are ridiculous! Each is a long, thin, curved shape. Passengers are dropped off in front, the ticket counters are right in front of the doors, and then you follow the curve around to your gate area. If you are an observant sort, you may notice a suspiciously small area behind your designated security lanes. You may also notice there are only three or four gates per security checkpoint, and there are no services past security — no restrooms, no concessions.

Um, YEAH. Good one, KC.
