New puppy!

The latest addition to our growing family is a 10-week old standard poodle puppy. As you can plainly see, he is almost as cute as Elizabeth, though he’s not yet quite so sure of himself in his new surroundings. We know his human parents and his doggie parents, so we realize it’s only a matter of time until he’s well-adjusted and fully enjoying himself here!

I expected some cat/dog fireworks when we brought him home, but so far they are just curious about each other, though if someone gets skittish it seems contagious, and they give each other a wide berth. It’s going much better than when we got our second cat, Coozie. THAT occasion was marked by a three day hissy fit before Caper realized Coozie was here to stay.

His parents have him crate-trained already, so he likes sleeping in there, even though we can tell he misses his litter mates. We are working on housetraining him, or if you prefer, learning to read his signals that he’s ready to go outside.

New Barberitos!

The new Barberitos location is open across from the movie theater. Now you can catch a movie, head to Limelight for a beer, then when you want some real food instead of the fried appetizers they have at Limelight, you nip next door to Barberitos to eat a burrito as big as your head. Perfect!

What makes a Mocha?

Apparently one of my local coffee places, Abbi’s, uses both dark and white chocolate syrups in their mocha. White chocolate isn’t really chocolate, it’s just a confection. Why would you put it in an espresso and milk beverage? I’ll take mine without the white chocolate, thanks.

Never trust the weather report!

Now that I’m sitting at home with the heater running full tilt, having enjoyed two hot showers and eight hours under the heavy feather duvet, it’s hard to describe how cold I felt yesterday on Brasstown Bald. The weather reports all called for temperatures in the upper fifties, so I planned to wear several inner layers, a fleece, and a windbreaker.

When the wind started howling through in late morning, I realized the temperatures were in the 30s, and saw my first snowflake of the year, I knew I was under-dressed. I probably would have been fine if I hadn’t gotten all sweaty by pushing twenty-five pounds of stroller up Brasstown Bald. At the steepest section of the road I was actually pushing the stroller faster than some bicyclists were able to turn over their peddles. I’ve seen claims that this climb has a 26% gradient on one section but that seems like a lot! I want to ride up next year; Andrea and Elizabeth can take the car and give me someplace to put the bike when I get there.

The race was incredible! I’ll get my pictures up early this week, but if you just can’t wait to see how it went, have a look at the coverage on cyclingnews. With the weather so nasty up on the mountain and most of the current big American names in international cycling racing each other up the mountain a few short feet away from us, it really was epic.

Training tip

Barberito’s Fatty is a tasty meal and probably better for you than most fast or even sit-down restaurant fare, but it is not appopriate to eat BEFORE the training ride. Trust me on this one.
