Gamecubing it up
That Nintendo Wii, it sure looks shiny and new, at least, the ones you see in the stores bolted to their displays look shiny and new. They don’t seem to be nearly as supply-constrained as the XBox 360 when it was released last year. When I saw how much those sold for on Ebay, I stopped by my local Target at least once a week to see if I could grab one just so I could sell it.
Though I’ve been playing computer games off and on since about 1984 or so, I’ve never owned a game console. With a little encouragement from my brother-in-law, I realized there’s not much reason for me to pay $250 for a console, let alone go out of my way trying to find one, when I’ve never really played any of the games that are out for ANY of the last-generation consoles. He told me about a couple of fun games for the Gamecube, and the idea spent a couple weeks rolling around in my head.
Last week I told Scott, who really wants to pick up a Wii, I think due in no small part to the fancy wireless controller, and he thought it was a good idea, too, so on the way back to our neighborhood from work, we dropped by EB Games and picked up a couple of reconditioned Gamecubes and a large handful of games. For less than half the cost of a new Wii, I get a new (to me) Gamecube with five games.
Wee!

Sharp is as sharp does
Of course my subject here is pretty cute, but I’m disappointed by either the focus or the lack of sharpness. I hadn’t used my 50mm 1.8 lens in a while and so this was just playing a little bit with it. In addition to forgetting to set a reasonable white balance for these difficult and fairly dim lighting conditions, I also chose to use the widest aperture available on my lens, 1.8. After wondering if there was something wrong with the focus on the lens, I read online that this lens gets much sharper at f2.8 and higher. Of course then I’d have been dealing with a lot more noise. I already shot this at ISO 500 in order to get a 1/40th second exposure, so any way you look at it, the conditions were difficult for shooting without a flash.
This brings up a point: I’ve been neglecting my photography hobby lately. I noticed while shooting New Baby’s belly casting process that I’ve become pretty rusty. The lighting conditions weren’t the best, but I didn’t pick the right combination of white balance, flash power, aperture, ISO, and shutter speed to get really great images in this series. They’re certainly not BAD for snapshots but I want to do better and know I can. Maybe I should start a photo blog and strive to post a picture per day.
